HMS Wilton

9 July 201718 March 2021 By Liam Heatherson

The HMS Wilton was a Royal Navy minesweeper and minehunter ship built in 1970. It was the first ever warship constructed from fibreglass which gave the vessel a very low magnetic signature against magnetic mines. It was armed with a single Bofors gun. In 1974 the ship took part in Operation Rheostat, to clear the Suez Canal of magnetic mines. It operated in coastal territories until it was retired in 1994 and remained in storage until 2001. It was then sold and continues to be used as the home of the Essex Yacht Club in Leigh on Sea today.
