Tucked away in a quiet corner of Wrexham Cemetery lies this abandoned 1930s’ mortuary. In 1916 it was decided that Wrexham needed a new hospital and the Wrexham and East Denbighshire War Memorial Hospital opened in 1926, however in the 1930s, the hospital mortuary was frequently full, requiring additional capacity.

The small, two room building contains a body slab complete with drainage, a sink and some storage. Most of the deceased were German airmen who were shot down during the war, alongside some victims of an RAF bomber crash near Bwlchgwyn in January 1943.
The mortuary was only open for a few years and closed in 1943. It was re-discovered in 2019, but unfortunately little has been done to protect the building which now has missing doors and large holes in its roof.
