Chalkwell Sun Shelters

4 February 20214 February 2021 By Liam Heatherson

The coastline surrounding Southend from Chalkwell to Thorpe Bay has been a tourist hotspot for people; often urban residents from London, to enjoy the sea air. Sun shelters of varying styles can be found all along the shore and clifftops, some as old as the early Victorian era. We managed to find one abandoned off of Cliff Parade which appears to be from the mid-20th Century. It has deteriorated in recent years and is firmly padlocked as well as loosely fenced off.

Also along Leigh Cliffs East was a boarded up structure that appears to possibly have once had some kind of frontage resembling a viewing platform. It also has a small balcony ontop. This could have been another sun shelter constructed at a similar time.
