Hidden away just off of the A12, you wouldn’t have a clue that this was here unless someone told you! Just down the bank from a lay-by is this infantry firing position. During the Second World War, this area would have formed part of the defences of Chelmsford, in addition to the anti-tank blocks and spigot-mortar emplacement that still survive. Armed soldiers would have been based at this point to guard the city from any invasions. The close proximity to the road means that there could have perhaps been some sort of road block or check point here.
The firing position today is overgrown but remains in a good condition due to its discreet location. Original chains and bits of barbed wire still remain.
